Handfasting & Blessing Stones Explained

I have to start by saying that I had such a great time at Indie Wed yesterday!! Yes, I was utterly exhausted by the time I got home, but I had a ball!

One of the best parts was meeting brides and grooms and talking to them about various wedding ceremony rituals. Here I'm explaining the handfasting ritual. This is an ancient Celtic tradition, believed to be the origin of the term "tie the knot."

In this ritual, the couple holds hands and a cord or ribbon is wrapped around their joined hands. They can exchange vows at this time, if they choose, or have their Celebrant recite the Blessing of the Hands.

Blessing Stones

I also had the chance to explain the Blessing Stones. In this ritual, guests are given a stone (or shell, or anything they choose) at the beginning of the ceremony. During the ceremony guests are asked to hold the stone in their hands while making a wish for the couple. After the guests have bestowed their blessings upon the stones, they are collected by a friend or family member. This will then be a keepsake for the couple.

A Ritual for Chocolate Lovers

May I offer you some chocolate? Umm.... not so fast.

These chocolate bars will be a part of my display at Indie Wed next weekend. They are used for the Tasting of the Elements ritual in a wedding ceremony. In this ritual, the different flavors represent stages a couple may go through (ex - salty represents tears, spicy represents the "heat" of an argument, etc.).

If you'd like to learn more about this ritual - and see how it's done- stop by my 11:00 workshop, "The Perfect 'I Do' for You." I'll demonstrate this ritual, as well as several others.

And by the way, I'll need volunteers from the audience, so if you like chocolate, this one's for you!

Getting Ready for Indie Wed!

I'm really looking forward to participating in this year's Indie Wed on January 28th. Not only will I have a table, I will also be presenting a workshop called, "The Perfect 'I Do' For You." The focus of the workshop is to give couples ideas for making their wedding ceremony more personal. I'll cover a variety of topics including music, readings, and rituals. There will also be time for Q & A, so bring your questions!

In the meantime, I'm working on my giveaways. I was looking for some type of fun goodie bag, and came across these "robots in love" baggies. Perfect! I just finished assembling them and they're all ready to be included in the swag bags given to to the first 50 attendees.

So, now I'm busy making buttons - thanks to my dear friend (and artistic adviser and all-around advice guru) for lending me her fancy schmancy button making machine. It's pretty addictive. My children and I got lost in a button-making haze for about a week.

Now that I'm done cutting stuff out of magazines and making buttons for fun (like a cool tentacle button that's on my jacket right now), I'm working on making buttons to give away at my table. I have buttons with the AnitaWeds logo, my signature red flower and cute "groom" and "bride" buttons.

So, if you're coming to Indie Wed, stop by and say hi. And grab a few buttons for your jacket.

Robot Love

Earlier today I was looking at robot wedding cake toppers. Why? Because I like cake toppers. And I love robots.

So, in my internet wanderings, I came across this tutorial for making your very own robot wedding cake topper. Ya gotta love Instructables!

While it did take about a week to put together this particular pair of love-bots (each tiny part had to be individually painted), it only cost about $20 to make.

It's a great way to save money - and make your wedding a little more YOU.

Engaging Stories

It's engagement season! Many couples became engaged over the holidays, with more to come on Valentine's Day. This got me to thinking about proposal stories.

My own poor husband underwent an ordeal when trying to surprise me with a romantic proposal. Let's just say that I was really hungry after a long day of work, he was acting weird, and I was getting impatient. And grouchy. And did I mention that I was really hungry?

When he finally asked, my "Yes!" was followed by, "Can we eat now?" And, believe it or not, he still married me.

One of the best things about being a Celebrant is having the privilege of telling couples' love stories. The proposal is an important part of their story, sometimes being perfectly executed, sometimes not going quite as planned.

Here are some of my favorite proposals of couples I've married....

On the 4th of July, during a fireworks show
Hiring a diver to appear from the ocean, presenting a shell containing the ring
Texting a picture of the ring with the caller ID reading "Will you marry me?"
Ring tucked into a flower in an elaborate bouquet - which the recipient failed to notice until prompted
Friends helping with the big moment by setting up candles on a beach for a romantic setting
A ring tied to a handmade bookmark, tucked inside the couple's favorite book
On a camping trip, just as the sun was rising
Ring hidden inside a box of chocolates
Trying to find the perfect moment before going out for the evening - and finally proposing in the bathroom
Treasure hunt leading up to a box with a ring
Making arrangements with the restaurant to have the ring placed on top of a cake - only to have the bride wanting to skip dessert
Spelling out "Will You Marry Me?" across three computer screens

Despite the various methods, all the proposals were a success!

An Ode to the Octopus

I know, the octopus was very trendy for awhile. But, it seems that the fickle fashionistas have moved on to the cute little owl. I, however, remain loyal to my tentacled friend.

Who can - in an instant - change shape AND color? Who can squeeze into unbelievably tiny spaces? Who can brilliantly mimic other sea creatures? Yes, that's right - the octopus, my friends.

Raquel & Jim's Perfectly Purple Wedding!

It's long overdue, but I wanted to share some tidbits from Raquel & Jim's fantastic wedding held at Chateau Bu-Sche' last November.

Jim and Raquel were two of the nicest (and most fun!) couples you could ever hope to meet. I had a blast working with them on their ceremony and knew their wedding would be pretty cool.

On the big day, I was literally ooh-ing and ahh-ing over all the amazing details. Raquel poured her heart - and talent- into the wedding and it showed. Everything from the place cards to the table decor was amazing.

I clearly remember standing at the sweet table with photographer Dawn Roscoe, both of us swooning over the purple and silver sweet table. And who was responsible for that amazingness? None other than Luscious Layers Bakery.

I can speak from experience when I say that their macarons are unbelievably delicious. But,

I still kick myself for not tasting those chai marshmallows when I had the chance! Sigh....

I think my favorite detail had to be the the wedding cake topper - Iron Giant and Hello Kitty, hand in hand. Oh so fabulous.

Cori & Steve's Wedding!

Wish Upon a Wedding will be granting a wedding wish to Deshawn & Monica next month, a couple who met in high school and re-connected last year, via Facebook.

After 25 years, and many health-related struggles for Deshawn, they will have their dream wedding on 11-11-11.

Fall Wedding Ideas

My close, personal friend Martha has some great ideas for fall weddings. Everything from marzipan acorn garnishes to autumn boutonnieres.

But my favorite has to be a basket of leaves for the flower girl. Simple, yet so perfect.

Instead of dropping rose petals, your little cutie can toss colorful fall leaves on her way down the aisle. Not only is it completely adorable (and environmentally friendly!), the lucky bride will get to walk down a path of leaves.

And..... if you collect your own leaves - it's completely free. Better yet, let the flower girl do it for you.

Being YOU on Your Big Day

I have an acquaintance who opted not to wear make-up on her wedding day. She never wore make-up in her daily life and didn't see the point of putting it on for the wedding. She mentioned this to a co-worker and was asked, "But don't you want to look good for your wedding?" She responded with, "Don't I look good now?" That ended that debate.

I just came across the post, Beautiful Without Makeup, on 2000 Dollar Wedding. It was about this very same thing!

The story made me remember my own wedding day. A friend, who was a professional cosmetologist, offered to do my make-up before the wedding. I went to her home studio, where gave me my "new look," insisting I needed to be "more dramatic" for the photos.

When I got to my car to go home, I checked my face in the mirror. I looked ridiculous! I burst out laughing and wound up wiping most of it off.

So, why do brides feel compelled to be someone different on their wedding day? There is so much pressure put on women to conform to a fairy-tale version of beauty on the Big Day. It's compounded by magazines, t.v. shows - and even friends and family,

But if you're not inclined to go that route, is it really such a big deal? So what if you don't want to put on make-up? Who cares if you wear your hair down, just like you always do? It's YOUR wedding!

I am happy to say I've met many wonderful brides who've chosen to do their own thing - without worrying about other people.

My favorite was a recent bride who wore a gorgeous, traditional, long, white wedding gown - with sneakers. I overheard two older family members talking about it. One lady said incredulously, "Wow - she just does whatever she wants." And the other replied, "And it works." Love it!

I'm all for doing what ever the heck you want on your big day. If you want to wear crazy-high stilettos, go for it. But if you want to wear flip-flops instead, you have my blessing. Just be YOU.

Festive Flower Food

Flowers. Every human being grows up surrounded by flowers and their pure, innocent beauty. Like love, flowers start as small, insignificant seeds, soon blossoming into gorgeous symbols of beauty. Likewise, love starts small but soon spreads, infecting the entirety of its person. Like flowers, love is beautiful. Like flowers, love brings joy.

On the left is an amazing example of a flower wedding cake - indeed, it is not a cake at all, but potted flowers in the shape of a cake. I love this unique "cake" which blends the wedding guest "goodie bags" with the notion of cake. And look - all the cake, with more beauty and zero calories! This lovely example comes from the blog Little Cake s.

Here are some more standard-looking flower cakes. This one appears to be decorated with orchids. The artistry used to make the flowers on these cakes appear realistic is incredible. The one on the right is from Wedding Cake Pictures.

Here's a more traditional flower wedding cake. However, it has a less-natural and more Asian feel to it. The design is beautiful, from the carefully crafted flowers to the gold-plated wrap around the base of each layer.

On the right is one final flower-coated cake. The little flowers are sakura, or cherry blossoms. In place of the traditional bride and groom are two hearts. This photo comes from Deviant Art. What a beautiful flower-coated cake!

Carrie and Jamil's Ceremony with Bengali Traditions

This past spring, I had the honor of officiating the wedding ceremony of a terrific couple, Carrie and Jamil. Not only were they two of the nicest people you could ever meet, they were super fun to work with! Funny and thoughtful, they made my work such a joy.

They hosted their wedding celebration at the amazing Zed 451. The ceremony took place in a lovely, open room with a fireplace as the backdrop, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere.

Jamil's family hails from Bangladesh, so we incorporated traditions to honor his culture. The first Bengali ritual was Shuvho Drishti, in which a mirror is placed in front of the couple, symbolizing them looking into the future.

They are asked what they see in the mirror, to which they respond, “I see the rest of my life.” This was followed by the tradition of sharing sweets, representing the sweet life they will share together. So beautiful!

I love when couples choose to incorporate rituals from their cultural backgrounds. It's such a meaningful way to create a personal, unique ceremony.

Carrie and Jamil, thank you so much for letting me share in your beautiful wedding. It was wonderful!

Something for Your Sweet Tooth

My BFF Martha, recently featured candy-inspired cakes on her website. They are, of course, fabulous!

Just take a look at this beauty in the photo. Imagine this cake along side a colorful candy buffet. Willie Wonka would be proud!

If you are considering candy for your wedding, I would suggest a stop at Sweetness in La Grange.

My husband discovered the shop with our son one afternoon while strolling around La Grange Road. When I saw the treasures they came home with, I had to check it out myself.

Not only does this place have an amazing selection of vintage candies, there are plenty of new delights to discover, too! There's a whole counter devoted to a variety of sweets sold by the pound - and displayed in big glass jars. So cool! I'm talking Swedish fish, licorice, flying saucer candy.... you name it!

To make the experience even better, owner Julie Magno-Procich is very welcoming and friendly . To my detriment, she was so friendly during my visit that she offered me a candy sample. She innocently asked, "Do you like grapefruit?"

It's not my favorite, but I like it just fine. So I said, "Sure!"

Well, then she told me I had to try the grapefruit gummi candy. I tasted the sample and a new addiction was born. They're incredible! Of course, I purchased a bag full and have created a slew of new addicts in the last few weeks.

In any case, stop by Sweetness and say hi to Julie. She creates fantastic candy displays and buffets for weddings, so be sure to ask her about that. Just be careful, she may offer you a sample and then you're in trouble!

DIY Pumpkins!

Now that the weather has cooled down a bit (for now, anyways), my mind has been wandering to thoughts of fall....

Halloween costumes. Baking bread. Picking apples. Carving pumpkins. Making applesauce. Oooh, I can't wait for all that fun stuff!

In the meantime, I offer you this sweet, simple project for making your own little fabric pumpkins.

These darlings would be the perfect table decorations for a fall wedding! They can also double as wedding favors.

The pumpkins are super easy to make - you just have to be able to cut a circle (or an approximation of one), sew a few stitches (they don't have to be even), and glue on a stem. Easy!! Click here to see the step-by-step directions on Craftster.

But - Cake Wrecks also regularly posts some of the most incredibly unique and beautiful cakes ever seen.

Place Card Ideas

I have officially decided to drop the facade and admit that, deep down inside, I love Martha Stewart. There. I said it.

And now that I have that off my chest, I can share this bit of loveliness with you:
Fabulous place card ideas!! Featured on Martha Stewart Weddings. these suggestions are unique, crafty, and practical. I love it!

And..... most of these ideas are project you can do yourself. It's a great way to add a personal touch - and helps spare the wedding budget!

I especially like the cheese and cracker starter - it's an appetizer and a place card!

It's also possible that I like it because I love cheese almost as much as I love cupcakes.

My other favorite is the fabric flowers, which double as boutonnieres for the guests. You can even have your tables color-coordinated!

Angie & Ben's Summer Soiree at W Hotel

A video treat to start the weekend!

Angie and Ben were married in June at W Hotel City Center. I love this place - it's loud and colorful and funky when you walk in, but when you go up a flight of stairs you're transported to another world! There's an intimate feel to the space and you're swept away by the amazing architecture and decor. A wonderful wedding venue!

Another special treat was getting to work with the fabulous Heather Vickery and the terrific staff from Greatest Expectations Special Events and Weddings. Heather makes sure every detail is just perfect - and smiles through it all!

If you're planning a wedding and need someone to handle the details, Heather is definitely the person to call. The stress will melt away as soon as you hear her voice!

My Fantasy Wedding Dance Party

I have been planning a wedding for the last few years - in my head. Even though I've been married eighteen years, I sometimes fantasize about having another wedding.

I have many of the details of my fantasy wedding already set. It would be held at Catalyst Ranch, of course. Luscious Layers Bakery will make my cake - and the sweet table. (Hey, it's my fantasy - I can have both.)

Since those two important details are done, I spend most of my time considering the music playlist. This is a constantly-evolving creation. The problem is that it keeps getting longer.

I can't imagine a party that doesn't include dance songs from the 80's and 90's (my era!). The obvious choices are New Order and Depeche Mode. And I can't forget It's My Life by Talk Talk (not that Gwen Stefani cover - ick!). Then there's Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction. Ans then I'd have to get at least one INXS song in the mix. Where will it end??

Then, I keep finding more songs that I love - from this decade. Like, Michael Franti's Say Hey (I Love You) and Closer by Ne-Yo. It's getting ridiculous. I'd have to have a whole weekend to play everything I want.

But I guess that, since it's only a pretend wedding that I'm planning, I can add all the songs I want. You folks who are planning an actual wedding have the difficult task ahead of you - finding songs you both like, your guests will dance to, and fitting them all into a few hours of reception time. And then there's the No Play list to consider..... you definitely don't want to waste time hearing songs you hate. Chicken Dance, anyone?

Mary and Trina's Wedding at a Lake (that used to be a pond)

After 15 years together, Mary and Trina celebrated their love with a civil union ceremony on July 23rd. They shared the moment with family and friends at a lovely lake-side party room in Arlington Heights. Except, there wasn't supposed to be a lake there. Just the day before, the room overlooked a pond with a fountain. (Notice the picnic table submerged in water?) The heavy rains from the night before turned the surrounding area into a wet mess.

Luckily, the rain didn't dampen anyone's spirits. Guests trudged through flooded roads and around blocked streets and came out ready to have a great time!

For the ceremony, Mary and Trina chose to participate in a sand ritual. One of my favorite details was that each guest received a little bottle of rainbow-colored sand as a keepsake.

My other favorite detail was that they served tropical drinks - in slushie form! They had two slushie machines, serving Margaritas and Pina Coladas. These two know how to throw a party!

Superdawg Wedding!

After writing a blog post about hot dogs, I was compelled to have one for dinner last night. We were out running an errand and, lo and behold, hound ourselves on Milwaukee Ave. As soon as my kids realized where we were, a shout went up for "Superdawg!"

While we sat at a table and watched the sun set behind Maurie and Flaurie, I realized that I completely forgot to mention Superdawg in my post about hot dogs at weddings.

This is an institution from my Chicago childhood - I can't believe the omission! I'm hanging my head in shame right now.

So, I offer my sincerest apologies to Superdawg. And Maurie and Flaurie, those adorable giant mascots.

Naturally, I mentioned that it would be pretty cool to have a wedding at Superdawg. My husband joked that I could do the ceremony over the drive-in intercoms. (I don't think so.)

When I got home, curiosity got the best of me and I researched the Superdawg wedding idea. And guess what! A couple just got married at the newest Superdawg location in Wheeling!

According to an article in the Daily Herald, just two weeks ago, Brittany and Eddie McKee became the first couple married at Superdawg.

Way to go, Brittany and Eddie!

Now, if there's anyone interested in being the first couple to be married at the Superdawg in Chicago, call me! I know a Celebrant who would love to create a cool ceremony for you.

Hot Dog! It's a Wedding!

July is Hot Dog month. As it well should be. Being a born and bred Chicago gal, I love a good hot dog.

But, I will tell you right now that I am a ketchup lover. And (prepare to gasp) I positively HATE mustard.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest, we can move on.

So, when I heard that this is Hot Dog Month, I immediately thought, "Hot dogs at a wedding!" because that's just how my brain works. But really, wouldn't that be fun?

This doesn't have to be limited to an outdoor wedding, either. There are companies that will bring the dogs to you!

Have you ever had a hot dog from a cart on a hot summer day? Mmmm... there's nothing better. Unless maybe it's a hot dog cart at your wedding! Check out Carts of Chicago for one of their nifty mobile hot dog carts. Just make sure they have extra ketchup.

Here's another idea - the folks at Portillo's can cater your event. They even have an amazing chocolate cake. In fact, one of my grooms last year insisted on chocolate cake from Portillo's for the wedding. It's that good. Heck, I'm starting to think you should have your wedding AT Portillo's!

If you really like hot dogs, they can even be your wedding theme. I found cute hot dog wedding products offered by Wedding Pop, including invitations.

Now that I've told you about this, I think I'm going to go have a hot dog for lunch. You should, too.

Elise and Ed's Wedding - Featuring a Mixed Drink

A few months ago I had the honor of marrying Elise and Ed, one of the nicest couples around.

They had a lovely ceremony, held at Hotel Baker in St. Charles, also the site of the reception. Hotel Baker is a fantastic spot for a wedding - and just about any celebration! Built in 1928, this historic hotel is in downtown St. Charles and sits right on the Fox River.

The original plan was to have the ceremony in the rose garden, on the patio overlooking the river. But, rainy weather forced us indoors. The good news is that the Rainbow Room ballroom is gorgeous - and boasts a light-up floor. It was a lovely place for the ceremony!

One thing I loved about Elise and Ed's ceremony was that they opted for a unique unity ritual. Rather than a sand ceremony or a unity candle, they chose to share a drink. Now, sharing a cup of wine is pretty common, but they did something that was a little more "them." They took their two favorite beverage, iced tea and lemonade, and poured them together to make an Arnold Palmer. They then shared the concoction - a perfect unity ritual!

And one more great detail - they had personalized bottles of Jones Soda as party favors for their guests. Love it!!

Highlights from Under a New Moon

Over a month has gone by since Under a New Moon took place. The June 1st civil union wedding was so wonderful! I've been wanting to write about and share all the details but it seems that I can never find the right words to convey all the emotion. I literally start tearing up every time I talk about it in detail!

So, I've decided to let a video clip show you what an amazing night it was, and I'll just share a few random impressions.

I'm still completely blown away by how generous all the sponsors were. Not only did people jump at the chance to donate their services, what they provided went way beyond anything I expected. The flowers by Pollen were exquisite. The sweet table provided by Luscious Layers was gorgeous and delicious (I still daydream about those coffee-flavored whoopie pies). The food served by Entertaining Company was wonderful. Bleeding Heart Bakery's cake was spectacular. Toast and Jam DJs made sure everyone was out on the dance floor (especially me). And I Do Films made sure to capture all the special moments (hopefully not the ones where I was on the dance floor!)

And Jeremy Lawson, our fantastic photographer, was so vital to this event turning out as it did. From the beginning, he was instrumental in getting other folks on board and was the most enthusiastic supporter and advocate. And the pictures..... wow! The ones I've seen so far are incredible! Well, except for the one of me dancing. We won't talk about that one.

The amazing thing is that no one asked for anything in return. A guest at the wedding asked me why there weren't business cards on the tables to advertise the various sponsors. And I realized that no one had even asked to do so. It just wasn't about that. The whole night was about celebrating civil unions and, most importantly, our great couples.

And speaking of the couples...... I can't believe that we found twelve wonderful, nice, deserving people! Seriously, each of them was a delight - and so gracious. They were such a pleasure to work with and made everything so much more fun. And what's really cool is that they all bonded right away. These were twelve strangers - they all had different stories and came from different backgrounds, but they hit it off. It was incredible to see them become the "Under a New Moon Family."

And finally there are the three people I will be forever grateful to:

Lauren, from Catalyst Ranch - my tireless partner and voice of reason throughout all the planning. Without Lauren, none of it would have been possible.

Beth from SQN Events and Heather from Greatest Expectations - they took the reins and never looked back! There is no way the night could have been so wonderful without them. I can't even list the many ways they helped, but they truly kept things moving (and kept me sane). Wedding Planners are amazing - and Beth and Heather are wedding planning goddesses.

This whole experience has been wonderful. It was more work than I had imagined, turned out bigger and better than I could have ever dreamed, and was worth every second of effort.

As corny as it sounds, this was truly a labor of love. Everyone participated out of love and gave their very best. Everyone involved, from the couples to the sponsors, have given me so much joy..... and now I'm gonna cry again.

Gift-Giving Rules and Other Wedding Myths

So, it's been awhile, folks! Sorry for the lag in blogging, but I've been trying to get caught up with writing ceremonies and all the paperwork that regularly invades my desk. I'm now all caught up, but not by my own accord. I had the good fortune of having a wonderful young woman offer her services as an intern. The fabulous - and organized! - Maya has been a life saver. So, thanks to Maya I'm back. Yay!

And here's what I wanted to share.....

An article in the Chicago Tribune yesterday morning caught my eye. The article, Don't Invite Th ese M yths to Your wedding Festivities had some great points that I feel compelled to note. So, click on the article and check it out.

But, one that I feel worth mentioning is the topic of gift-giving. I'm a 1st generation American and my family's roots in the Old Country compel them to follow certain rules in social situations. One of those rules is related to gift giving. Not only do they feel that you should at least cover the cost of your dinner, the older folks also believe that your gift should not be out-done by someone else. Not that you should go overboard and be to show-offy, but you shouldn't give less than others and thus become the talk of the town. People talk, ya know.

It's hard to navigate this subtle balance, which is why a certain family member called me a few months after my wedding to see what a certain guest had given us as a gift.

It went something like this (except in German):

Her: So, what did you get from Mrs. X as a wedding gift?

Me: Why?

Her: Because we're going to her son's wedding on Saturday.

Me: So?

Her: And I want to know what they gave you.... so I have an idea.

Me: Um, I don't remember. (I really didn't remember, but wouldn't have told even if I did)

Her: I thought you wrote it on the back of the cards for when you sent thank you notes.

Me: Oh, I threw those away already. (I said this as I was looking for the cards, so I could throw them away)

Her: Really? (She suspected I was lying - imagine that)

Me: Yes, really. And I wouldn't tell you anyway, Mom.

Okay, so now you know the culprit (I assure you, she means well). But, as you can see, this topic bugs me.

My advice? Give what you can give. Give what you feel inclined to give. Give from the heart.

One of the best wedding gifts I received was a glass sculpture made by my sister-in-law. The other was a painting - a portrait of me and my husband - done by my then 6 year-old niece.

If you are a bride or groom, do not expect your wedding to be a money-making venture. The reception is a party you're throwing. Your friends and family are coming to celebrate with you.

If they bring a gift, that's the icing on the cake!

Jenny & Jeff's Wedding - or - Was May 7th Really All That Special?

It's been a long time, folks! I've been busy working on the details of Under a New Moon. But now that it's all set and all the entries have been submitted, it's time to get back to blogging!

So, now that we're already in May, I thought I would make you aware of a very significant day in history -

May 7th.

On May 7, 1660 Isaack B. Fubine patented macaroni.

May 7th, 1983 - A man named August Hoffman broke a record (and proved he had abs of steel) by performing 29,051 consecutive sit-ups!

In 1941 - on May 7th - Glen Miller recorded the "Chattanooga Choo Choo."

But even more importantly, on May 7^th of 2008, Jenny and Jeff met for the first time. Then, on May 7, 2010, Jeff proposed.

And yesterday, May 7, 2011 - they were married!

Yes, May 7th really is that special!

The wedding took place at the beautiful Patrick C. Haley Mansion in Joliet! A rainy morning made way for a bright, beautiful (but windy) evening, allowing the ceremony to take place in the lovely garden.

I especially enjoyed seeing the flower girl and her handsome young escort (the adorable Aaron, pictured here) make a dramatic entrance, which was appreciated by the chuckling guests.

Congratulations, Jenny & Jeff! May every May 7th be as happy as this one! It was a joy to be a part of your day.

PS - Mario and Princess Peach on the cake were the perfect touch!

Under a New Moon is a celebration of same-sex civil unions in Illinois! Be one of the first couples to have a civil union ceremony in Chicago!

Six lucky couples will win a midnight ceremony and "mini-wedding" at Catalyst Ranch, Chicago's most unique event space!

The party will begin at 10:30 on June 1st, with guests arriving and enjoying appetizers and cocktails.

Group ceremony will begin at midnight, followed by a reception that will include dessert - and dancing!

This momentous occasion will include:

Pampering for the couples before the ceremony, including hair and make-up services provided by Nika Vaughan
A group civil union ceremony - conducted by ME, Anita Vaughan! This will include individual vows for each couple
A reception for couples and their guests following the ceremony, with fabulous deejay, Toast and Jam

Share your story with us, in writing or with a short video, submitted to the page. Then, get your friends and family to show their support by liking your entry.

The six winners will be selected by the Under a New Moon committee.

Rules:

Entries must be submitted via Facebook page, either in written form or in a short video (maximum 5 minutes).
Entries must include a photo of the couple.
Couples must submit their own entries. Entries for other people will not be considered.
Finalists must be available for an in-person interview at Catalyst Ranch to be scheduled on May 9th. (This is a change from the original date)
Winners must obtain a civil union license at a Cook County Clerk's office on June 1st. You will not be able to participate in the event without a license!
Winners will be required to attend a wedding rehearsal at Catalyst Ranch on the evening on May 31st.
Winners agree to be available for media contact and understand that their likenesses will be used for promotional materials.
Winners (both partners) will be required to sign a contract, including agreement to obtain civil union license on June 1st, photo release, etc.

Best Birthday Ever!

Today's my birthday and so far, I'm having the best birthday ever! My family sent my on a treasure hunt with a stack of clues. I uncovered the Lego gorilla man I've been dying to get, a new cd, a book, and a way awesome stuffed octopus!!

We're going out for breakfast and then tonight I'm going to be at BE: the exhibit. I will be making an announcement tonight about an upcoming event at Catalyst Ranch, celebrating civil unions in IL.

Pie in Honor of Pi

So, I keep hearing that pie is the next big thing for weddings. I don't know if I buy it. How can you compete with the delightfully compact deliciousness known as the cupcake?

On the other hand, I have to admit that I do love me some pie!

I like making them and I really like eating them. And I make a mean strawberry margarita pie with a pretzel crust, if I do say so myself. But pie will not overtake cupcakes at weddings. There. I said it.

What brought up this whole topic is that today is Pi Day. Go, 3.1415... (etc. etc.)!

In celebration of this occasion I was planning to make a pie. But do I have all the ingredients I needed for any one of the pies I wanted to make? Of course not. And do I feel like running out to the store for one item? Also, NO.

You Can Make a Difference in Someone's Life!

Last week, I blogged about BE:The Exhibit, happening here in the 'burbs next week (remember? it's on MY BIRTHDAY!).

I was lucky. I was never bullied. I was pretty happy as a kid. I had someone who made a difference when I was young. Her name was Gwen Wizner and she was a friend of my mom.

Gwen was larger than life - a pile of bright red hair, emerald green eyes, impeccably dressed, and a personality that sparkled. She called me "Dolly." She made me feel like I could be someone special.

Everyone needs a Gwen, but not everyone who needs someone is lucky enough to have someone. You can fill that need. You can make a difference.

A Cephalopod Wedding Dress.... Happy Monday!

You may not know this, but I'm a bit of a cephalopod nut. Squid, octopus, cuttlefish - I love them all. So, imagine my delight when I found details of this wonderful DIY wedding at craftster.org.

The bride sewed her own wedding dress - a funky frock speckled with squid! There was a bright green peek-a-boo petticoat that completed the outfit.

The wedding cake was modeled after their invitations, which featured the couple as giants chasing movie monsters. Thus, the cake featured a city skyline and was artfully adorned with tentacles. Love it!

Just had to share this delight with you. It truly made my day!

BE:The Exhibit is a one-night-only artistic installation aimed at combating homophobia and teenage bullying in the Chicagoland area through art and activism. What started as one boy’s cry for help through an anonymous letter has grown into a national art campaign and documentary.

Professional Chicago-based artists have created original works of art – paintings, photography, sculpture – to be shown at BE and auctioned off for charity. There will also be a live stage show featuring music, dance and spoken word from some of Chicago’s most talented LGBTQ and straight-supportive artists and activists – all created from the secret thoughts of bullied teens.

BE is also an interactive exhibit. Guests will have the opportunity to write their own anonymous letters about their fears, create original art that will be auctioned off for charity, share their personal stories with our “5 Question Confessional Cam”, participate in our stage show and meet other Chicagoland teens, families and activists – all with the same aim: to combat homophobia and teenage bullying through art and activism.

DATE: Friday, March 18^th 2011

TIME: Doors open at 6.30 PM, Show begins at 7.45 PM

Alison & Scott's Sweet End-of-Summer Wedding

As I've mentioned before, I'm wayyy behind on my blog posts. I have been meaning to share details of this wedding for months. So, finally, here you are.

Scott and Alison had a lovely wedding last September at the Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest. Already a gorgeous location, the beautiful weather made it even better. We were a little concerned about rain when we had the rehearsal, but the day was great. I did brag that I have never had a ceremony "rained out," so I was relieved to maintain my clean track record.

The ceremony was in the lovely outdoor courtyard which added to the warm, intimate feel of the occasion.

One of my favorite details of the ceremony was that Alison and Scott chose to incorporate a ring blessing in the ceremony, after they exchanged vows. This ritual is such a perfect way to include family and friends, and really creates a sense of community.

I asked the guests to direct their blessings and positive energy to the rings now worn by the couple, in order to infuse them with the love of the entire group.

It was wonderful - you could really feel the warmth and energy flowing forth from their family and friends. What a joy to be a part of such an amazing moment!

Another unique touch was the personal details Alison and Scott added to the day. My favorite was that the tables were identified by pictures of the couple, enjoying various activities together.

What a great idea!

Alison and Scott, this is long overdue, but congratulations! Thank you for letting me be a part of your wedding day.

Civil Unions licenses available June 1st - ceremonies begin June 2nd

If you're planning on a civil union this summer, there are some important things you need to know.

Civil union licenses will be issued starting June 1st. However, civil union ceremonies cannot occur until JUNE 2nd.

There is a one day waiting period for civil union (and marriage) licenses, so they are not valid until the day after they are issued. While civil unions may be legal as of June 1st, this means that licenses will begin being issued that day. The actual ceremonies cannot take place until the following day, June 2nd.

For more information on this subject, go to the Cook County Clerk's website page, Civil Union Law Highlights.

To obtain a civil union license, both partners must go together to an Illinois County Clerk Office. Click here for a list of offices, with addresses of the main location. Also, be aware that some larger counties have several locations, such as Cook county, which has six offices. Don't feel that you have to head to downtown Chicago to get your license - any of the suburban locations offer this service.... and probably won't be as busy.

Happiness - To Go!

A while back, I heard one of my son's friends refer to the outfit he was wearing (Bears jersey and sweatpants) as his "happy clothes." I liked the idea, but thought nothing further of it.

Shortly after that, when he had a group of friends over, one of the boys was being silly and pretended to be day dreaming when the other boys talked to him. He would say, "Sorry, I didn't hear you, I was in my happy place."

Later, I realized that these boys were on to something. I could use a bit of a happy infusion myself. So, I decided to make myself some happiness-to-go, in the form of a charm bracelet.

After two trips to the bead store, I completed my bracelet last week. I started

with a pile of charms, each representing someone or something special to me. I added a few beads, some because they have meaning, and others just because I happen to like them. (Pretty things make me happy!)

Some of my favorites are:

Bride & groom charm for my Celebrant work
Maneki Neko, the Chinese good luck cat - we've had one since we were married (and who can't use a little extra good luck, huh?)
Cupcake charm - because, as everyone knows, I love them!
Jade & pearl beads from one of my mother's old necklaces
A grill charm for my hubby, who loves a good barbeque
Clay beads made by my BFF - just for me

Now I can take all my happy things with me wherever I go..... and so can you!

This would be a ball for your bridal party! Each bridesmaid can make her own funky bracelet to wear for the wedding - and then has a great keepsake.

Allan and Amy's Rockin' Wedding!

I can't believe I have gotten so behind in my wedding blog posts! All I can say is that the hustle and bustle of the holidays is my primary excuse. Or at least, it's the excuse I was using in January....

In any case, I am thrilled to share some pictures from the November wedding of Amy & Allan.

Amy and Allan are such a fun couple! I knew I wanted to work with them from the moment I read Amy's initial email to me. Her sweet and spunky personality were evident right away! When I met them for coffee to discuss their ceremony, I knew we were meant for each other!

Their ceremony was held at The Carlisle in Lombard, which has large, beautiful ballrooms. I emphasize "large" because this was one big wedding, folks.

There were twenty-nine people in their bridal party!! It just goes to show you what great people they are - everyone loves them! And Amy & Allan love them right back.

One of my favorite parts of the ceremony was their choices for music. For the processional, the bridal party walked in to "Purple Haze" and Amy entered to "Stairway to Heaven." The sand ceremony was accompanied by the Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" and recessional song was "At Last." All the songs were performed by a wonderful string ensemble. It was fabulous!

Sue & Gary's Romantic Wedding.... at Home!

Since it's Valentine's Day, I thought I'd share the details of a romantic wedding that I had the pleasure of officiating this past weekend.

Sue and Gary tied the knot in their lovely Oak Park home on Saturday afternoon. It was just the two of them, their photographer, Lee Balgemann, and Henry & Abby, their furry friends. Henry even wore a black tie for the occasion.

It was utterly romantic! The setting was perfect. They were sealing their commitment in their very favorite place - home.

Lots of candles in the background helped create a warm, intimate setting as they exchanged their vows with a combination of laughter and tears.

My favorite part of their story is the engagement. Unbeknownst to Sue, Gary had the engagement ring in his possession when they went on a vacation to California. To create the perfect moment, he hired scuba divers to help deliver his message.

As they were sitting on the beach, soaking in the sun, two scuba divers suddenly appeared in the water and approached them. They presented Sue with a large shell. She opened the shell and I'll bet you know what was inside! Yep - the ring!

How smooth is that? I gave Gary major points when I heard that story!

Well, the engagement finally came to fruition on Saturday, and Sue and Gary are already on the road to Happily Ever After. I'm confidant that they'll enjoy a wonderful journey together.

Congratulations, Sue & Gary. I'm so happy I was able to be a part of your wedding day. It was such a joy.

Why Marriage Matters

While I'm really excited that civil unions will become legal in Illinois on June 1st, I'm still left with a bit of sadness. It smacks of "separate but equal" which, of course, isn't equal at all.

True marriage equality is essential. I long for the day that gay marriage is legal all across the country. Until then, let's celebrate this victory in Illinois, while still working towards complete equality everywhere.

Indie Wed Favorites - Part One

I had a great time checking out all the sights and sounds at Indie Wed, not to mention all the little tastes! So, it's been more than two weeks, and now I'm finally getting around to writing about it.

Just thought I'd mention a few of my favorites. These are in no particular order, mind you.

First, I finally got to meet Jeremy Lawson, a fantastic photographer who also happens to have a very cool blog. I've heard so much about him for so long, I felt like I already knew him, but it was fun to actually see him in real life. He had a lively circus-themed booth that he shared with makeup artist Nika Vaughan. As fun as Jeremy and Nika both were, the clown at their booth scared me a teeny bit.

Go to the blog. You'll see what I mean.

On the opposite side of the show, I made my way over to the (cacao) folks, so I could check out their offerings. They had some tempting samples, but you know I was immediately drawn to the darling little cupcakes. My weakness.

I tried the adorable little Bellini cupcakes and they were amazing! Yummy!

Upstairs, I had the chance to say hi Sarah from wedding creativo, the

talented photographers you may remember from their beautiful work on Lisa & Ben's wedding. The had a great display, which was an Venetian Carnivale theme.

While wandering around with my fellow Celebrant, Michele Rose, I ran into other great vendors I've worked with, including photographerJason Kaczorowksi, and deejay Harsh Singh. They were just visiting, like Michele and me.

I also ran into a friend from high school who is planning to a vow renewal ceremony in November. How cool is that!

While wandering around, I came across The Button Florist. Loved it!! Her bouquets are gorgeous!

I love the fact that she makes her own ceramic buttons (which are fabulous!). but also uses vintage buttons and other recycled materials. The end result is a really beautiful bouquet - or centerpiece - that lasts forever. Love it!

All in all, it was a great afternoon with lots of things (and people!) to see. I'll share more tidbits in an upcoming post.

Sarah & Teresa's Dia de los Muertos wedding - 10/8/11

Okay, folks - fasten your seatbelts and get ready for the juicy details of this way cool wedding! Just look at these two - you know this is gonna be FUN!

Teresa and Sarah are having their reception at Catalyst Ranch in Chicago, one of my all-time favorite venues. This fun spot definitely lends itself to their Day of the Dead theme with its bright colors and funky decor. Perfect choice.

And why the theme? Teresa explained, "This colorful celebration fits our lives in a few very symbolic ways. The first is the death of our lives separately, and the rebirth of our lives together for eternity." She also explained that her grandfather

is from Mexico and the theme is a tribute to him and a celebration of his culture.

It also doesn't hurt that Sarah and Teresa are both fans of punk rock, So the Day of the Dead images "are very fitting."

Sugar skulls are the symbol of the day and will be incorporated in a variety of ways. First of all, they have a tattoo artist friend who designed a sugar skull portrait of the couple. See the photo of the drawing? Note the sunflowers, which are a tribute to Sarah's grandfather, who had a spectacular sunflower garden. The wedding flowers will be sunflowers and marigolds, known as Flor del Muerto.

But, who the heck is Clover? That's Teresa's nickname! So, this really is them, in case you were wondering. I'm glad we have that cleared up. Moving on....

They're incorporating the sugar skull portrait by having a stamp made of the drawing, so they can adorn their wedding invites with the skulls. They're considering having tattoos made of the drawing to give out as wedding favors. Ooh! I totally want one!

The couple will be making their own wedding favors, which will be sugar skull-shaped soaps. Cool, huh? Plus - they're making actual sugar skulls which will adorn their wedding cupcakes as well as the tables. Squeee!! I can't stand all this fabulosity!!

Of course, you know the cupcakes are a big hit in my book. But, did you notice the cupcake tattoo? I did!

Prior to the wedding, they're inviting friends over for a sugar skull decorating party to help them make the favors. What a great way to get people involved!

For the reception, the Day of the Dead theme will carry over into the menu. Guests will get to dine on a taco bar and made-to-order guacamole. Plus, lots of chips and salsa.

The beverages will include Mexican beer and wine, and a specialty drink - Margaritas. These women know how to throw a party!

Other great details? How about an awesome sugar skull cake topper?! They're having one custom made by the etsy shop, dnacreations. See the photo of an example. Sweet!

And one of my favorite details of all?? Teresa's proposal. For Sarah's birthday, Teresa created a painting that said "Marry Me" and tied an engagement ring to the middle. Here she is with her painting. I guess Sarah liked it, 'cause she said "Yes."

Alison- getting married on 9/11/11

Alison is planning the most amazing Alice in Wonderland-themed wedding! Check out the fantastic engagement photos. (She did ensure me that they don't dress up as Alice and the Mad Hatter on a regular basis!)

The bride is a graphic designer and her groom is an artist, so this will be one amazing DIY event! They wanted "lots of unique touches and mismatched eclectic items," so most of their purchases have been from thrift stores, antique shops. yard sales, and flea markets. Thrifty and creative - I love it!

The ceremony will take place in a rose garden, followed by a tea party reception. Here's how Alison described the scene: "We are going to have long tables with mismatched chairs (painted by yours truly), hand-sewn chair pads, napkins, and tablecloths. Our guests will dine on mismatched china, and the tables will be decorated with playing cards and teapots filled with flowers and silver tea trays filled with little tea sandwiches and 'eat me' cakes."

They'll also be making topiaries covered in "twinkly lights" and will be stringing colored lanterns from the trees. Alison put together an inspiration board of photos, which will give you an idea of what this will all look like. Although, I know she will make it much incredible!

Alison's dress will have a light blue sash and she'll be wearing a pocketwatch necklace on a long strand of pearls. Her groom will have a pocketwatch boutonniere and is even considering a top hat. I think he should go for it - he looks pretty dashing in one, don't ya think?

In addition to being crafty, Alison is also a baker. Her hobby is baking cakes, so she's creating their "topsy-turvy teapot shaped wedding cake." How cool is that??

Lewis Carroll has even inspired the invitations that Alison's designing! They include original illustrations and whimsical wording.

Man, I wish I could be there to see this!! I only hope Alison may wish to share some photos after the wedding. Hint! Hint!!

AnitaWeds Giveaway - Honorable Mention #1

The Giveaway ended on Monday and then the hard work began - selecting a winner! I received such fantastic entries, so I had a hard time deciding. I narrowed it down and then enlisted the help of my website guru (aka - my husband!) and my logo designer (a brilliant artist who happens to be my BFF). We finally came to a decision. We also felt that it was necessary to also have two honorable mentions. They were just that good!

So, before I announce the winner on Friday, I'll tell you about the entries who made it so darn hard to choose.

The first:

Cori and Steve, getting married on 9-10-11

They're planning on a ceremony that will be "a bit of

sweet and a dash of funny." They come from different religious backgrounds, but plan to include her Jewish heritage by ending the ceremony with the breaking of the glass. As Cori put it, "...honestly, who doesn't love to stomp on glass till it breaks and yell out Mazel Tov! Sounds like a good time to me!"

Their reception will include other personal touches. For example, the customized cake topper. As you can see from the photo, they're Hawks fans, especially Steve.

In fact, the Blackhawks even had a role in their engagement! Just look at their engagement photo, if you have any doubts! Well, the wedding cake topper will feature a bride and groom made to look just like them..... with Steve in a Hawks jersey- and both of them perched on a hockey puck!

Cori's favorite flower is the orchid, so she'll be carrying a bouquet with the beautiful blooms. The picture here is a photo that inspired her choice. Steve will also have an orchid boutonniere. And since they both like bamboo, they'll have bamboo in the centerpieces and will offer guests mini "lucky bamboo" as wedding favors.

Cori said, "We're hoping some of our luck in love will rub off on our guests!" How can you not love these people?!?!

She also mentioned that their "ultimate favorite thing" is their families, explaining, "Without our family's love and support we don't know where we'd be!" They plan to include special items from both of their families into the ceremony and reception. So sweet!

I recently noticed that several people on Facebook have posted "101 Things about Me" and I thought it was a cute idea.

However, I can also see how some folks might thinks it's presumptuous for me to assume that anyone really cares to know anything about me. You're right. So, if you don't want to know anything else about me (and I don't blame you), please feel free to move on. I have many other posts that have absolutely nothing to do with me.

Otherwise, here you go.....

101 Things About Me

I only came up with 66. I didn’t want to bore you to death.
I hate mustard – the smell, the taste, everything. Blah.
I have a huge collection of beads. There’re waiting to be turned into jewelry that I’ll never wear.
I finally officiated a ceremony at Brookfield Zoo – now I want to perform a wedding ceremony at the Shedd Aquarium.
I love Portillo’s hotdogs – topped with tomatoes, pickles, and ketchup. Yes, ketchup. I’m not ashamed.
I had no idea how happy I could be until I met my husband.
I miss Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We have a poster of the musical episode on our living room wall.
I have two children – a son and a daughter. They are my greatest joy.
Joan Cusack came through my line when I worked at Jewel in college.
I kissed a hermit crab when I was on the beach on Saipan. Don’t ask me why. It was funny at the time.
Even though I was born in Chicago, German was my first language.
I officiated my friend’s wedding on Halloween and all the guests were in costumes. My daughter was the flower-girl, dressed as a witch. It was as fun as it sounds!
Peonies are gorgeous. Even with the ants.

I was so excited when I purchased a food processor last summer. It’s still in the box – with the instructions.
Sun-dried tomatoes make just about everything taste better.
The Office almost never fails to make me laugh out loud.
I am really good at making brownies – from a mix. The secret is adding things. But I can’t tell you what things, or it wouldn’t be a secret.
I like to be the first one to get to the Sunday paper so I can divide up all the sections, get rid of the ads I don’t want, and get first crack at Ask Amy.
Give me a hot beverage and a book store to roam, and I’m a happy camper.
I would love to meet Clarence Darrow. It would help if he were still living.

Lara & Joe's Wild Wedding!

I'm finally getting around to posting pictures of Lara & Joe's fabulous wedding this past October at Brookfield Zoo.

Besides getting to marry another librarian (some of my favorite people are librarians!), I finally had the opportunity to do a zoo wedding!! How cool is that?

Seriously, I LOVE Brookfield Zoo (and librarians), and every time I went to the zoo with my kids I would say, "I really want to do a wedding here." My wish came true!!!

But, what made it even better was the fact that Lara and Joe are so nice - and fun! I had a great time working on their ceremony. I even managed to use one of my favorite quotes, from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: While they’re riding up in the glass elevator, Willie Wonka says to Charlie, "Don’t forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he wanted…..

He lived happily ever after."

They also incorporated a handfasting in the ceremony, which is one of my favorite rituals.

Of course, the surroundings were nothing less than amazing. The ceremony took place in front of the Roosevelt Fountain, which is home to pelicans rescued from the Gulf of Mexico. A beautiful setting!

Cocktail hour was in The Swamp, where guests could mingle amongst the river otters and alligators. So cool!

My favorite part? Lara's dad giving me the new title of Priestess.

Celebrating Good Deeds and Great Talent!

I just heard some great news and had to share. I'm all about CELEBRATING, you know!

First, I need to introduce you to Kate Diaz. She is a local singer/songwriter that you will definitely be hearing about in the future! I had the good fortune of meeting Kate and her mom earlier this year at our homeschool Co-Op. I had the great pleasure of hearing her play guitar and sing - such a wonderful, rich voice!

So..... I was really excited to hear that Kate was invited by the band Sister Hazel to perform on stage with them at House of Blues earlier this year. Kate had done a cover version of "All for You" which the band saw (and liked!) on YouTube. They admired her talent as well as her generous nature. You see, Kate has been performing at Potbelly's on the weekends, saving her tip money to donate to a charity which supports families dealing with cancer. Sister Hazel knew that Kate was someone who deserved celebration!

Here she is performing with the band at House of Blues. This was so fantastic - it had to be shared!

And, the story doesn't end there! Kate has written a wonderful Christmas song called "Christmas Smiles." The song can be downloaded at iTunes. All proceeds form the song will be donated to CureSearch for Children's Cancer. Download it now! You'll get a great song and you'll be donating to a great cause.

Beautiful Corsages for Your Wedding

Okay, I admit that, up until recently, the thought of a wrist corsage made me cringe. But that probably goes back to an incident a long time ago, when I went to a dance with a friend (I didn't think it was a date - we were going with a group of friends) and he presented me with a wrist corsage. I wanted to die. It didn't help that it was a big purple orchid and wearing it made me feel like someone's grandma.

Oh well, the night was a disaster and thus, my disdain for the wrist corsage was born.

But....... that ended when a couple I married last year ordered a corsage for me to wear when I officiated their wedding. I was really flattered - and it was a beautiful corsage!

Then, a few months later, another couple gave me a wrist corsage. Wow! These sweet gestures changed my mind.

And then - I just checked out a post on Martha Stewart Weddings. She's done it AGAIN! Check out these luscious corsages!! The article even gives you ideas for sweet little guest corsages, delicate crepe paper flowers, even flower rings for your bridesmaids! Most of these ideas include instructions to make them yourself, so they won't cost you a fortune.

And they're so pretty!!!

Okay, I admit it - I was wrong for a long time. I encourage you to get corsages for everyone! And don't forget me. =)

Q: What type of research do you do for ceremonies?

When discussing my work recently, I mentioned that I love having the opportunity to do research on a wide variety of topics. I was asked to describe the types of research I do for ceremonies.

So, in response to that question, I thought I'd first explain why I do research.

Couples that work with me complete questionnaires, with questions about their relationship (how they met, what they love about one another, etc), what they want in a ceremony, and their own likes/dislikes and interests. I take that information and get to work on creating a ceremony that reflects the couple - as individuals and as a pair - and tells their story.

So..... I do lots of research. Which I really enjoy (the library is my friend!) Some of it has to do with topics you would expect, some may be a little surprising.

Here are some topics I've researched for ceremonies:

The Julies Get Married!

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of officiating the ceremony of Jule G. and Julie S. at Casa Royale in Des Plaines. But, to keep track of who we were talking about, they were known as Julie and Julene for the ceremony.

I've lived in Des Plaines for over 10 years, and I'm probably the only person in town who hasn't been to Casa Royale. I was always curious as to what it looked like inside, and I have to say that it was lovely. But, by far, the best part of it was the fantastic staff. From Lynn, the friendly and helpful wedding coordinator, to the wait staff who made sure everyone was taken care of, the service was really fantastic!

As for Julie & Julene's wedding, the ceremony began with them each being escorted down the aisle - Julie by her parents and Julene by her son. The bridal party followed, which included Julene's daughters. All three participated in the handfasting later in the ceremony.

Julene and Julie's story was sweet and romantic, reflecting how deeply in love they are, and the strong bond they share.

They exchanged vows under the Chuppuh, which I explained as follows:

Julie and Julene are exchanging vows under this wedding canopy, known as a Chuppah in the Jewish tradition. The Chuppah represents shelter - the home the couple will build together, as well as the home each has built in their hearts for their beloved.

As you’ll notice, the sides are open, just as their home and arms will remain open to you, their family and friends.

The four poles correspond with the four directions - north, south, east and west - just as their love reaches to the four corners of the world.

At the end of the ceremony, we had planned for the traditional breaking of the glass. The only problem was that the glass that Julene had to step on was virtually unbreakable! She tried several times, and then Julie took a turn. Even Julene's son got in the act, but to no avail. After much laughter, Julene tried again, and the glass broke. Whew!

Julie and Julene, I really enjoyed being a part of your special day. After the struggles with that glass, the rest of your days should be smooth sailing!

Sarah & Steve's Architectural Affair

Sarah & Steve were married last month at one of my favorite venues, Architectural Artifacts.

This great spot is chock-full of amazing treaures to admire - a real feast for the eyes!

I noticed that, as guests walked in, they couldn't help but wander around, taking in the visual delights. This venue, which is also a store during the day hours, boasts three floors of architectural goodies, ranging from marble statuary to wrought-iron gates, light fixtures to door knobs, and vintage posters to birdbaths.

There is an enclosed courtyard where outdoor ceremonies take place, which served as the setting for Sarah & Steve's ceremony last month. Even though it was the end of November, we were treated with a gorgeous day. One of my favorite features is the red phone booth off to the side. I mean, you never know when Dr. Who may want to pop in for an event.

Steve & Sarah's wedding was so much fun! They picked a fabulous venue and worked with me to create a ceremony that was all their own. While the choice of readings were of the classic romantic nature (Yay for fellow English Lit majors!) their ceremony was anything but typical or boring.

There were lots of laughs - some due to the periodic pauses due to the passing "L" trains. But mostly, the laughter stemmed from Sarah & Steve's funny comments during the ceremony. They really cracked me up! It was such a joy to share the tale of how they met (at softball) and the happy details of their love story.

The place they chose, and their ceremony, were a fantastic reflection of a wonderful, witty, and utterly charming couple.

Congratulations, Sarah & Steve! I loved being a part of the fun!

Patty & Jessica's Rustic Barn Wedding

When I arrived at Byron Colby Barn for Jessica & Patty's rehearsal, the bridal party and family members were busily putting up decorations. In fact, some folks were hammering the frame of the canopy when I arrived, while others were hanging lanterns in the trees. This was definitely one cool, crafty DIY wedding!

I have to preface all the details of the big event by saying that Patty and Jessica are one of the most fun couples I've met. After talking to them and then reading their questionnaires, I was really excited to work on their their ceremony.

It turned out to be sweet and funny - and I even got to use Twilight references. Heck, the ceremony started with a quote from the Princess Bride. They were definitely my kinda gals!

But, I have to admit that I adored them even more when I saw all the wonderful details Patty and Jessica had planned for their rustic fall wedding. There are so many delicious tidbits to share, that I'll have to let the pictures tell the story. But, here are a few of my favorites:

Buckets of birdseeds for the guests to throw after the ceremony
The button bouquet (made by Patty!) and coordinating button-aires for the guys
Pitchers filled with citrus fruit as table decor, serving as the table markers
Jars of jam as table decor - and guest favors
An impossibly cute flower girl and ring bearer duo
A wonderful wooden chest with a gorgeous quilt - a wedding gift for the couple!
